A Unique Proposal
Chloe stepped out onto the rooftop garden. The cool evening air brushed against her cheeks. Below her the city twinkled in its thousands of tiny jewels stretching out to the horizon. She took a deep breath, noticing the zesty scent from the rooftop's herb garden.
"This is the spot?" Whitney's voice drifted up from the garden's center, where she was admiring a few rainbow flowers.
Chloe's heart pounded. This was it. She had practiced this moment many times. She walked towards her girlfriend, the proposal ring burning a hole in her pocket.
"Yes," she answered, her voice shaky. "This is perfect."
Whitney turned with a bright smile on her face. "It is perfect."
Chloe took another step. Her smartwatch was warning her about her heart rate. It was now or never.
She reached into her pocket and puled out the ring. It was a beautiful piece, one of a kind, made with a bio-polymer that shimmered with the colors of the aurora.
"Whitney," she said, trembling more than she expected. "I know we've only been together for a short time, but I've never felt more sure of anything before. In my life. I love you, and want to spend the rest of my life with you."
She pulled a small box from her pocket and knelt down on one ring. She looked up at Whitney's widened eyes and a grin on her face.
"Yes!" she exclaimed eagerly.
Chloe gingerly pulled the ring out of the box and slipped onto Whitney's finger. The two kissed and embraced each other passionately. The stars overhead twinkled serenely.
"I love you Chloe," Whitney said when they finally pulled apart.
"I love you too," Chloe replied in a bright whisper.
There was a bench nearby overlooking the cityscape. Chloe led Whitney and they spent the evening gazing at the lights of the city with their arms wrapped around each other.
Whitney traced her finger over the ring, which had an iridescent material that shimmered against the moonlight.
"It's beautiful. The ring is unlike anything I've ever seen."
Chloe felt a warmth inside as she blushed.
"It's a new bio-polymer. I designed it myself," she explained.
"You designed this?! I knew you were brilliant, but this is on another level!" Whitney exclaimed.
Chloe giggled.
"Well, I had some help," she elaborated. "My company has a state-of-the-art physics computer with a powerful AI. It can simulate molecular structures and predict their physical properties with amazing accuracy. I just had to give it a starting point: a material that was strong, lightweight, and could refract light like... well, to match your eyes."
"So you programmed my eyes into a ring?"
"Something like that... I spent a month feeding it data. Everything from the refractive indexes of butterfly wings to the tensile strength of iron. I even uploaded photos the aurora. It was something completely new, something that never existed before. Just like us."
"Chloe," Whitney's eyes began growing moist.
"I named it Whitneystone," she admitted. "Because like you, it's beautiful, precious, and unique."
Grabbing her hand again, Chloe took her down from the rooftop garden to a cozy, hole-in-the-wall restaurant located in a vibrant alley. They shared a plate of mushroom-based dumplings and sipped glasses of sparkling algae wine.
As the night deepened, they wandered through the city. They paused at a small holographic art gallery, then shared a kiss in the park as a robot quartet played.
The night ended back at their home as the city continued to twinkle outside the window. Tomorrow would be the start of a bright new future together.
