[Chapter 13] Popeye the Astronaut Man
Now that Popeye has entered the public domain, I am writing a science-fiction story starring the sailor in an entirely new adventure. This story will be told over the next thirteen weeks exclusively available to members. If you’re not a member, now’s a great time to join.
I plan to self-publish the entire work this summer. In the meantime, here’s Chapter Thirteen: Passing the Torch.
The triumphant cheers around him were a salve to Popeye's weary soul. Earth was safe, the Ropoda threat neutralized, and a galactic peace was beginning to settle. He managed to be escorted to a hospital for emergency medical attention. Late that night he looked out at the stars in the night sky from his bed. A contented sigh escaped his lips.
But amidst the celebrations from the residents of Sugar City, a somber note hung in the air. The war had taken its toll, leaving scars both physical and emotional. It would take weeks to dig through toppled buildings and reach a full accounting of the dead. Popeye himself bore the marks of battle.
As he got up to use the bathroom, he noticed Buck Rogers in the hospital room next to him. He was still awake. His gaze was fixed on the window and his shoulders were slumped. The usually imposing figure seemed smaller somehow. The weight of years and countless battles had finally caught up with him.
Popeye approached cautiously.
"Captain Rogers?" he began, his voice amiable. "You alright there?"
Buck Rogers turned, a weary smile touching his lips. "Just taking in everything, sailor. It's a beautiful galaxy, isn't it? Worth fighting for."
Popeye nodded in agreement. "Aye, that it is, Captain. But it's also a dangerous place. Takes its toll on a fella."
"You're right," he replied with a sigh. "This old dog's seen his share of battles. Maybe... it's time for a new generation to take the lead."
Popeye furrowed his brow. "What do you mean, Captain?"
Buck Rogers straightened up in his bed.
