Without further ado, here is Chapter 5: The Engineer's Puzzle


Sleep couldn't come to Rex that night. Each time he closed his eyes, he saw the image of Sophie Striker sitting rigidly in that chair, plugged into the wall. He felt a chill in his body that no amount of blankets could warm.

He pushed open his office door the next morning with a stumble and a groan. The coffee did little to help. Agnes was already there, naturally, tapping on her terminal with her usual fervor.

"You look like you went to hell and back," she observed dryly. "How's the missing girl?"

"I found her. Sort of."
