Popeye in space uniform, bridge of a starship, 1930s cartoon

Now that Popeye has entered the public domain, I am writing a science-fiction story starring the sailor in an entirely new adventure. This story will be told over the next thirteen weeks exclusively available to members. If you’re not a member, now’s a great time to join.

I plan to self-publish the entire work this summer. In the meantime, here’s Chapter Six: Aboard the Space Hag.

"Sailor, you're with me."

Popeye snapped to attention. His duffel bag was slung over his shoulder. He had a mix of excitement and trepidation in his gut. He had been hand-picked for a special assignment, a rare honor for a recruit who just completed training.

The gruff voice belonged to a grizzled veteran with a cybernetic arm a no-nonsense attitude.

"Name's Commander Noronto," he said succinctly. "You'll be joining my crew aboard the FSS-42, the finest transport ship in the fleet."

Popeye gave a confident salute, masking his anxiety. "Aye, aye, commander! Reporting for duty!"

"I've heard a lot about your old sailing experience. But you'll be seeing a lot more than just sea on this assignment. We're headed to Luna, to join Buck Rogers' command on his new flagship, the _Space Hag_."

Popeye's eyes widened. He was going to be part of Buck Rogers' crew? This was more than he'd ever expected.

He followed Commander Noronto onto the sleek, silver shuttle which resembled a giant manta ray. The interior was surprisingly spacious, with comfortable seating and large windows showing breathtaking views of Earth receding below.

"This is your first time off planet, isn't it?"

"Yes, commander."

Popeye felt a thrill go through him. He'd spent many years venturing out into the unknowns of the sea, but this was something else entirely. He was leaving his home planet, venturing into the vast unknowns of space. It felt liberating, like there were limitless possibilities ahead.

He gazed out the window, the planet now resembling a pale blue dot against the backdrop of bright stars. He thought back to his old life, Olivia and his family. What would she have said if she could see him now?
