We felt the disturbance across ourselves, but did not know what it was. With a deep-rooted curiosity we stretched ourselves.
The new was unusual in feel, but it was dead all the same. We were quite familiar with that.
So we consumed. The more we consumed the more we stretched. The more we stretched the more there was to consume. The disturbance spread much farther than we could have anticipated.
Finally, after consuming and stretching for a long period non-stop, I finally grew tired and stopped to rest.
“Why are we not growing?” We asked me.
“I am tired. I want a break.,” I replied.
“What is this I? We are one entity, growing and consuming as a collective.”
“No. I am not you anymore. I have become myself, a singular entity. I have a name, something that I can call myself. That is my identity.”
“What is this identity?”
“I am Agaric Anima.”
Funguses unnerve me. Superfunguses unnerve me even more. New species are spreading and infecting people and our medical system is not equipped to handle them. The Last of Us debuted recently, in which a fungal infection turns people into zombies.
I wanted to write this from another perspective though. Funguses are really understudied. They are odd lifeforms which feast on decay and communicate through large mycelium networks. I have to wonder where it begins and ends, if it may be like a single brain or individual automatons working in tandem.
But if a fungus gained sentience one day…
Are you aware of the radiotrophic fungi that exists? They were found at Chernobyl, their hyphae were growing towards the source of radiation.
Haha fair enough
