National Weather Service
"We will have a pleasant weekend, warm and sunny. Rain will follow on Monday, which will be good for your home gardens."
Duncan glanced momentarily at the hearts piling up on the stream. He was supposed to be a professional, not letting the public influence him. Still, he felt a bit of pride in his work.
"This is Weatherman Duncan, signing off."
He held up two fingers, making his signature peace sign. Corporate said these little things would make him seem more likable.
The stream ended and Duncan leaned back in his chair. He enjoyed it, but always felt a sense of relief once he was done.
"Duncan," his manager came up from behind.
Duncan immediately clicked a button on his keyboard. The wallpaper screen switched away from his spouse.
"Mr. Green," Duncan winced. He was older than his manager but still had to call him that.
"I saw your last weathercast."
"I thought it went well. It got more than the median number of likes."
"I don't like that it will be raining on Monday. I have an important golf outing planned for that day with national. A lot of VIPs will be there."
"But sir, I already announced the weather for the week."
"I think we can both agree we don't want them to be disappointed."
Duncan looked back to his screen, which now displayed the logo of the National Weather Service on a dull gray background.
Frowning, he looked up at his manager again.
"Yes sir," he acquiesced.
"Great to hear. You're a real team player."
As soon as his manager left, Duncan returned to the screen. He opened the window on his computer to edit his forecast. But before he did, he clicked the call icon and an audio call initiated with his spouse.
"I'm sorry dear," he apologized right after she picked up. "We'll have to cancel the picnic on Sunday."
I was inspired by recent developments where we can have some influence on the weather. Saudi Arabia has begun cloud seeding to encourage rainfall. As we continue to see worsening storms and higher temperatures, it might become important to consider how we can control climate to our benefit.
