Without further ado, here’s Chapter 4: Crosstown Trip.

GOVERNORS GATE: THE FUSION DISTRICT

Remember having to take a ferry to reach Governor’s Island? That’s ancient history. The island is now literally fused to the new peninsula, turning the ‘Governors Gate’ neighborhood into the ultimate collision between 19th-century forts and 21st-century urbanism. It’s the only place where you can buy heritage apples inside a Civil War-era emplacement and then walk ten feet to a cryotherapy spa.

The vibe here is, it can only be described as ‘colonial ghost meets tech bro’. We recommend hitting the Fort Jay Night Market. It runs every Thursday from March to early November. It’s the only place to get 3D-printed tacos.

The M90 Crosstown bus hummed quietly over the bus lane of Lenape Avenue like it was a puck floating on an air hockey table.

“Look at the canopy,” Kevin’s voice was muffled since his face was pressed against the window. “They planted Swamp White Oaks and Sweetgums.”

“Those plants have some deep roots,” Jenny added. “They’re pretty.”

“They’re functional too. Those are bioswales to help retain stormwater.”
