The Life of the Kidney
The sterile hum of fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting an eerie shadow across the pristine hospital floor. Nurse Amy had to fetch Doctor Dawn for an operation, who hadn’t been responding to calls.
Records show that Doctor Dawn had badged in to the subbasement. Oddly, she had been down there a lot. Sometimes she was there after working hours.
Amy stepped down into the dimly lit stairwell. There was a strange curiosity and a sense of unease. The basement wasn’t used. Nothing was down there. Or at least she thought. So what exactly drew Dawn there?
The basement was a labyrinth of forgotten storage rooms and outdated equipment. It was where they stashed all their obsolete tech. In the very back of this maze was her goal: a heavy unmarked door. The faint, rhythmic whirring caught her attention.
Summoning her courage, she pushed the door open. The first thing she saw was a massive, pulsating machine in the center of the room. Its surface was shimmering with an ethereal, unnatural glow. Cables and tubes snaked out of it, stretching upwards into glass tanks with a murky, viscous liquid.
